[Желтый император] приказал Ли Хэй234 выйти тайно235 под прикрытием и путешествовать по всем штатам, чтобы соблюдать те законы и правила, которые не были постоянно превосходными.237
Ли Хэй наставлял феномену23:” когда он был почерневшим, тогда они были черными; когда он был побелевшим, тогда они были белыми.
Что же касается Земли … Тогда они были уродливы.
Что касается Человека, то он отражал их: когда человек был спокоен, он был спокоен; когда человек был активен, он был активен.
Когда Ли Хей объявил об ограничениях и установил их,.. [Ли Хей] сказал:,
“Небо и Земля завершены, и люди рождены. Оппозиция и уступчивость лишены правил; добродетель и тирания лишены шаблонов, покой и действие не имеют соответствующих времен года, фронт и тыл не имеют названия.
Теперь я хочу получить [правила] для противостояния и подчинения, [образцы для добродетели и тирании, и времена для покоя и действия], чтобы сделать мир правильным, и полагаться на времена покоя и действия, чтобы контролировать его. Как я должен действовать?”
Желтый император ответил: “Собравшись вместе … сделайте единую житницу, 24’ без тьмы, без света, Инь и Ян еще не существуют.

Небеса полагаются на этот факт, чтобы довести их до завершения.
Если бы Небеса не полагались на это, то это не привело бы их к завершению.
Если бы она не питала их, они не жили бы.
Что же касается жизни людей, то с самого начала жизни они питаются и размножаются.
Если бы они не совокуплялись и не размножались, они не участвовали бы в сохранении Земли.
Если бы они не ели и не действовали как люди (?), они не участвовали бы в сохранении Небес.
[По] этой причине … когда Инь полон, распространять добродетель (дэ) о … усилиях людей-это способ накормить их.
Когда Ян находится на своем пике, пересмотреть наказания (син) и ценить Инь в долгие ночи, когда ци скрывает беременность Земли, – это [способ] воспроизвести их.
Когда они не рассеяны и не омрачены,24″ исправьте их наказаниями и добродетелью”. 249 Весна и лето-времена добродетели; осень и зима-времена наказания.250
Поставьте добродетель на первое место, а наказание-на второе, чтобы питать жизнь.251
Когда средства к существованию фамилий252 будут определены и враги начнут сражаться, если вы не победите их, вы не стабилизируетесь.”
ЧАСТЬ ВТОРАЯ
В общем, воплощение завоевания лежит в наказании и добродетели.
Наказание и добродетель поистине величественны,
Солнце и луна наблюдают друг за другом
Чтобы прояснить их взаимную взаимодополняемость
И восполнить … недостаток дефицита.
Теперь по этой причине, заставляя людей работать, не принимайте Человека за свой стандарт;
При возбуждении дел,
Не будьте слишком подвержены воздействию Ян;
При занятии трудом на земле,
Не будьте слишком скрыты Инь.
Территория человека, который слишком скрыт Инь, будет опустошена; от человека, который слишком открыт Ян, будет удален свет; тот, кто принимает Человека за свое знамя, будет поражен оружием.
По этой причине тот, кто является правителем людей в соответствующее время, регулирует работу каждого из трех времен года, не нарушает работу людей и не противостоит Небесным временам года.
В этих условиях пять видов зерна быстро созревают, и люди [тогда] размножаются и размножаются.
Правитель и подданный, высший и низший в своих взаимоотношениях достигают своих амбиций, и Небо, опираясь на это, доводит их до завершения.
Теперь вы должны поощрять усилия людей в соответствии с подходящим временем года, ставить добродетель на первое место, а наказание-на второе и следовать за Небесами.
Если сезон будет полным, но дела пойдут на убыль, принцип Инь вернется снова, ци Земли снова уйдет.
Если, исправляя имена, вы исправляете наказания, то зимующие насекомые не появятся, снег и мороз снова станут холодными, а проросшие зерна тогда засохнут.
Эти бедствия … растут. Дела, начатые при таких обстоятельствах, не увенчаются успехом.
Если сезон будет сокращаться, но дела будут полны, принцип Ян вернется снова, и ци Земли не уйдет.
Если, исправляя имена, вы уменьшите наказания, то впавшие в спячку насекомые будут шуметь, увядшая листва снова станет пышной: хотя уже наступило время Ян, оно снова будет Ян, и хотя время повторяется, света не будет. Дела, начатые при таких обстоятельствах, не увенчаются успехом.
Когда будет совершен Путь Небесный, тогда будут приготовлены земные дела. Рассеянные, текучие и дополняющие друг друга дела мудреца.
Мудрец не лукав: он сохраняет чередование времен года.259
Любить людей с превосходной добротой-значит иметь то же Дао, что и Небеса.
Мудрец исправляется, чтобы дождаться Небес; он спокоен, чтобы дождаться Человека.
Он не увеличивает Небесное наказание, он не неверен, он не недостоин доверия.260
Он соответствует небесным временам года и решает все с ними. Если бы он не решал, что должно быть решено, он, в свою очередь, страдал бы от беспорядка в результате.
[The Yellow Emperor] ordered Li Hei234 to go out secretly235 under cover and travel236 all around to all the states in order to observe those laws and rules that were not constantly excellent.237 Li Hei instructed the phenomena23“: when he was blackened, then they were black; when he was whitened, then they were white.
As for Earth . . . then they were ugly.
As for Man, he mirrored them239: when man was quiescent, he was quiescent; when man was active, he was active.
When Li Hei had announced the restrictions and established the limits,… [Li Hei] said,
“Heaven and Earth are completed and the people are born. Opposition and compliance lack rules; virtue and tyranny lack patterns,24*’ quiescence and action have no proper seasons, front and rear have no name. Now I wish to obtain [the rules] for opposition and compliance, [the patterns for virtue and tyranny, and the seasons for quiescence and action] in order to make the world correct, and rely on the seasons of quiescence and action in order to control it. How should I proceed?” The Yellow Emperor replied, “Crowding together . . . make a single granary,24’ without darkness, without light, Yin and Yang are not yet existent. As Yin and Yang are not yet fixed, I don’t yet have any way to name the myriad phenomena. Now I will begin by distinguishing them into two and separate them to make Yin and Yang; I will divide them to make the four seasons . . . thereby act as its constants; when they are bright, they act as models, but it is the minute Dao that is to be carried out.242 Carry out the models and follow. . . male and female; when male and female seek each other, hard will join with the soft. When soft and hard complete each other, male and female will then be formed.243 Below, they meet with Earth; above, they meet with Heaven. When they obtain Heaven’s minuteness, the seasons then . . .are waiting for the emission of the Earth’s qi, then those that are to sprout will sprout, and those that are to breed will breed; Heaven relies on that fact to bring them to completion. If Heaven did not rely on it, then it would not bring them to completion. If it did [not] nourish them, they would not live. Now as for the life of the people, from the very first beginnings of life244 they eat and reproduce. If they did not copulate and reproduce, they would not participate in preserving Earth.
If they did not eat and did not act as humans (?),245 they would not share in preserving Heaven.246
[For] this reason . . . when Yin is full, to spread virtue (de) about. . . the people’s efforts is the way to feed them. When Yang is at its peak, to overhaul the punishments (xing) and to value Yin in the long nights when qi hides the Earth’s pregnancy is the [way] to reproduce them.247
When they are not scattered and not darkened,24” correct them with punishments and virtue.249 Spring and summer are the seasons of virtue; autumn and winter are the seasons of punishment.250
Place virtue first and punishment behind in order to nourish life.251 When the livelihood of the surnames252 has been determined and enemies start to fight, if one does not conquer them, you will not stabilize.”
PART TWO
In general, the epitome of conquest lies in punishment and virtue.
Punishment and virtue are august indeed,
The sun and moon watch each other
In order to make clear their mutual complementarity
And fill. . . lack deficiency.
Now for this reason when making the people work, do not take Man as your standard;
When initiating affairs,
Do not be too exposed to Yang;
When engaging in labor in the earth,
Do not be too hidden by Yin.
The territory of the person who is too hidden by Yin will be desolated; from the person who is too exposed to Yang the light will be removed; he who takes Man as his standard will be struck by weapons.253 For this reason, he who is a ruler of men at the appropriate time regulates the work of each of the three seasons,254 does not disorder the people’s work, and does not oppose Heaven’s seasons.255
Under these conditions, the five types of grain ripen quickly, and the people [then] multiply and proliferate. Ruler and subject, superior and inferior in their mutual relationships achieve their ambitions,256 and Heaven, relying on that, brings them to completion.
Now you should encourage the people’s efforts according to the proper season, place virtue first and punishment behind, and follow Heaven. Should the season be full, but affairs diminishing,257 the Yin principle will return again, the qi of Earth will again withdraw. If, when correcting names, you overhaul punishments,258 the hibernating insects will not appear, snow and frost will again be cold, and the sprouting grains will then shrivel up. These disasters .. . grow. Affairs initiated under these circumstances will not succeed.
Should the season be diminishing, but affairs full, the Yang principle will return again, and the qi of Earth will not withdraw. If, when correcting names, you lessen punishments, the hibernating insects will make noise, the withered foliage will again grow luxuriant: though it has already been the season of Yang, it will be Yang again and though the season repeats, there will be no light. Affairs initiated under these circumstances will not succeed.
When the Way of Heaven has been carried out, Earthly things will then be prepared. Scattered and flowing and completing each other are the affairs of the sage. The sage is not crafty: it is the alternation of the season that he preserves.259To love the people with excellent kindness is to have the same Dao as Heaven. The sage corrects in order to await Heaven; he is quiescent in order to wait for Man. He does not increase Heaven’s punishment, he is not faithless, he is not untrustworthy.260 He matches Heaven’s seasons and decides everything with them. If he were not to decide what ought to be decided, he would in turn suffer disorder as the result.
