“Когда Да Тин владел миром, Он был спокоен, мягок, корректен и спокоен;
Он был тактичен404 и скромен, 405 почтителен и бережлив;
Скромный и сдержанный, он выступал за 406 мягкое;
Он был корректен и надежен и тем самым доброжелателен;
Он ухватился за Единственную и ничего не искал;
412 В бою он показал, что не осмеливается;
Он сохранил мягкий счет и подтвердил его 414;
“Он не тратил впустую свои массы416;
Он не считал войну решающей;
Он не действовал как передатчик обиды;
Он не строил тайных планов;
Он не произвольно решал сомнительные вопросы;
Он не замышлял урезать чужие земли;
The Yellow Emperor asked Li Hei, saying, “When Da Ting401 possessed the world, he did not differentiate Yin and Yang, he did not count the days and months, he did not recognize402 the four seasons, and yet Heaven began matters at the proper season, and Earth completed them according to its resources. How did it happen like that?”
Li Hei replied,
“When Da Ting possessed the world He was calm, gentle, correct, and quiescent;
He determined that the tally of softness should be first.403 He was tactful404 and modest,405 reverent and frugal;
Humble and restrained, he advocated406 the soft;
Always putting himself behind and not in front.407
He was correct and trustworthy and thereby benevolent;
Kind and generous and thereby loved others.
He was upright, correct, and brave408
And did not dare to put himself before others.409
He was equable, quiescent,4“’ and not rash,4“
He grasped hold of the One and sought nothing;
He modeled himself on the female tally,
And what he produced was therefore soft.
. . . correct potency,
He loved potency and was not contentious.
He took his stand on not being daring,
And practiced not being capable.412 In battle, he showed he was not daring;
In understanding, he held on to413 incapability.
He preserved the soft tally and confirmed it414;
He waited for the extremity of the male tally and relied on it before he proceeded.415
“Under such circumstances, though his people worked, they were not. . . though they were hungry, they were not indolent; when they died, they were not resentful.
“He did not waste his masses416;
He did not consider warfare crucial;
And did not create the beginning of disorder.417 He did not act as a transmitter of resentment;
He did not make secret plans;
He did not arbitrarily decide doubtful matters;
He did not plot to whittle away other people s lands;
He did not plot to seize other people’s houses.
He was careful to secure his masses
In order to follow the footsteps of Heaven and Earth.
He did not arbitrarily initiate action, but waited for the furthest point of his enemy’s tally of opposition.
When he saw that Earth was taking away his enemy’s strength, And Heaven was opposing his seasons,4,H He relied on that to correct the enemy,
And in the course of events he subdued him. “Under these circumstances, when he was victorious in battle, he did not receive retribution; when he took away his land, it was not taken back.419 In battles, he was victorious outside his state, and inside it good fortune grew. He used very little might, but his reputation was brilliantly bright.42” It was the supreme example of being in compliance with the Dao.”
