Рождение и рост влекут за собой движение;
Тот, кто предан общественным интересам, умен;
Тот, кто наиболее умен, достигает наибольшего успеха;
Тот, кто наиболее прав, пребывает в покое;
Тот, кто лишен личных предубеждений, знающий;
Небо и Земля имеют постоянные закономерности;
У мириадов людей постоянные дела;
Благородное и низменное имеют постоянные позиции;
Существует постоянное Дао для заботы о служителях;
The Dao produces law. Law is what draws the line between gain and loss, and makes clear the curved and the straight. He who grasps the Dao, therefore, produces law and does not venture to transgress it, establishes law and does not venture to oppose it.1 . . . [If] he is able to align himself, then he will not be confused when he sees and knows the world.2
Vacuity without form, with its central seam dark and mysterious:
It is from it that the myriad phenomena grow.3
In birth and growth there is harm: this refers to desire, and not knowing when enough is enough/ Birth and growth entail movement; in movement there is harm; this refers to not acting at the proper season, and, though acting at the proper season, to . . .5 In movement there are human affairs. In affairs there is harm; this refers to opposition, to lack of balance, and to ignorance of what to use them for. Affairs entail speech. In speech there is harm; this refers to unreliability, to not knowing that one should fear men, to fake self-promotion,6 to empty bragging, and to considering what is insufficient as being a surplus. Therefore, though they emerge together from the darkness, some die by it, some live by it; some are defeated through it, some come to completion through it. Disaster and good fortune share the same Dao, but no one knows where they grow from.7
The Dao of seeing and knowing is merely vacuity and nonexistence. As for vacuity and nonexistence, an autumn hair brings an object into existence, for it then necessarily has a form and a name.8 If form and name are established, then the distinction between black and white has been made.9 Therefore the way in which he who grasps the Dao looks at the world is to be without tenacity, to be without location, be without action, be without partiality.
For this reason, no worldly affair does not make a form and name, reputation and claim for itself.10 If forms and names have been established, reputations and appellations set up, then there is nowhere to conceal one’s tracks or hide one’s true aims.11
He who is dedicated to the public interest is intelligent;
He who is most intelligent gains most success;
He who is most correct is quiescent;
He who is most quiescent is a sage.
He who is without private bias is knowledgeable;
He who is the most knowledgeable is the model for the world.’2
Measure them by the steelyard and align them with the correspondence to Heaven.’3 Material affairs must receive minute examination.
For affairs are like straight trees’4
And are as numerous as grains in a granary.
When the dou and shi measures have been provided And the chi foot and cun inch rules have been arranged,
Then no item will escape its true spirit.’5
Therefore it is said, when rules and measures have been provided, supervise and control them. Cut off, then reattached, disappeared, then present again: who knows its spirituality? Dead, then back to life, taking good fortune as disaster: who knows its limit? Trace it back to the formless: therefore you will know from what calamity and good fortune are born.The Dao of responding to transformation is to level the steelyard and then stop. If the light and the heavy weights are not balanced, this is called “Losing the Dao.”
Heaven and Earth have constant regularities;
The myriad people have constant affairs;
Noble and base have constant positions;
There is a constant Dao for caring for ministers;
There are constant rules for employing the people.
The constant regularities of Heaven and Earth are: the four seasons, darkness and light, growth and decay, the soft and the hard.
The constant affairs of the myriad people are: males perform agricultural work and females weave.
The constant positions of the noble and base are: the worthy and the worthless do not hinder each other.
The constant Dao for caring for ministers is: to employ the capable such that they do not exceed their duties.
The constant rules for employing the people are:
to remove private bias and establish the public interest.
Change and constancy, excess and abiding by the rules, control each other by the unorthodox.16 When the orthodox and the unorthodox have their correct positions, then names [and realities]17 will not leave them.
In general, in affairs there is no great and no small, for things make dwellings for themselves.111 In opposition or compliant, dying or living, things make names for themselves. When names and forms have been determined, things correct themselves.
Therefore, only he who grasps [the Dao] is able to understand the turnings of Heaven above and in the middle to comprehend the separation19 between ruler and minister; he minutely20 examines where the myriad phenomena begin and end, and does not act as their master. When, therefore, he is able to be most plain, most quintessential, grandly filling up the formless, only then can he be the rectifier of the world.
