Безмерно проницательный, несмотря на то, что безымянный.

Небеса не смогли покрыть его;

Земля не смогла его удержать.

Настолько маленький, что он может довести малость до завершения;

Настолько большой, что он мог бы довести масштабность до завершения.**

Он заполнил все в пределах Четырех морей,

И обнял то, что было вне их.

В Инь он не сгнил,

В Яне он не был сожжен.507

Он взял один в качестве меры и не изменил5(w

И смог оказаться правым для ползающих насекомых.

Птицы летели, приобретая его;

Рыба поплыла, приобретая его;

Дикие животные бежали, приобретая его.**9

Мириады явлений жили, приобретая его;

Многочисленные дела были успешно завершены it510;

Все люди пользовались им,

Но никто не знал его названия.511

Все люди пользовались им,

Но никто не видел его формы.

Один из них был его наименованием512;

Пустота была его обиталищем;

Бездействие было его первоначальной конституцией513;

Гармония была его пользой.

По этой причине высшее Дао настолько высоко, что его нельзя тщательно исследовать,

Настолько глубока, что ее невозможно постичь.514

Она ясна и ярка, но никто не может ее назвать;

Он широк и велик, но никто не может придать ему форму;

Он стоит отдельно и не связан ни с чем другим, и ни одно из бесчисленных явлений не может отдавать ему приказы.

Небо и Земля, Инь и Ян,

[Четыре] сезона, солнце и луна,

планеты и созвездия и облачные испарения,

Извивающиеся, которые ходят, и ползающие, которые двигаются,

И растения, у которых растут корни

Все берут свою жизнь от Дао

Но они не уменьшают его.516

Все они возвращаются в Дао

Но они не увеличивают его.517

Она твердая и прочная, но все же не сломана518;

Она мягкая и слабая, но ее нельзя изменить.

Тончайшее из тонкого не может достичь его;

Самый дальний из дальних не может пройти его.

Поэтому только Мудрец способен исследовать бесформенное,

Позже он сможет быть в высшей степени пустым:

Затем он проникает в квинтэссенцию Неба и Земли,

Проникает в тождество и лишен дифференциации,520

И гармонизирует везде, но не полон.521

Тот, кто практикует это Дао

Называется “Способный быть Квинтэссенцией”.”

Тот, кто умен, несомненно, способен заглянуть в далекое,

Он знает то, чего не могут знать другие люди,

Он получает то, что другие 522 не могут получить:

Это называется “Исследование Далекого и познание Отдаленного”.”

Если мудрый царь использует такой,

Мир подчиняется.

Без симпатий, без ненависти,

Когда начальство использует … (дальних)

тогда люди не будут обмануты и сбиты с толку.

Когда начальники пусты, а подчиненные спокойны, тогда Дао обретает свое правильное положение.523

Заслуживающие доверия способны быть без желаний и могут отдавать приказы людям:

Если вы чрезвычайно надежны и без проблем524

525 Разделите их в соответствии с их естественными разделениями, тогда мириады людей не будут сражаться.

Даруйте им должности в соответствии с их именами, тогда мириады явлений устроятся сами собой.526

Не трудитесь во имя порядка,

Не бездельничайте из-за беспорядка.

Широкие и большие, и хлопотные задачи не достигнут вас;

Глубокие и тонкие, и поиски не найдут вас.

Теперь будьте Едины и не трансформируйтесь,

Обретите корень Дао,

Постигните немногих, чтобы познать многих,

Постигните суть дел,

Ухватитесь за правильное, чтобы исправить неправильное.

Сначала познайте высшую древность,

Позже … квинтэссенцию^ яркую.

Примите Дао и контролируйте меры,

И мир может быть объединен.

Соблюдайте высочайшую древность,

И различайте везде, где его можно использовать.

Контролируйте их, когда у вас есть средства.527

At the beginning of eternal nonexistence,⁵⁰² Totally the same⁵⁰³ as the Great Void;

Vacuous and the same, it was the One;

Being the One constantly, it was nothing more.*⁴

Misty and blurred,⁵⁽¹⁵

It did not yet possess light and dark.

Daemonic and faint, yet it filled everywhere, Quintessential^ quiescent, it was not luminous.

Therefore it did not possess form;

Immensely penetrating despite being nameless.

Heaven was unable to cover it;

Earth was unable to hold it up.

So small, it could bring smallness to completion;

So large, it could bring largeness to completion.**

It filled up all within the Four Seas,

And embraced what was outside them.

In Yin it was not rotted,

In Yang it was not scorched.⁵⁰⁷

It took One as its measure and did not change^5(w

And was able to be right for the crawling insects.

The birds flew by acquiring it;

The fish swam by acquiring it;

The wild animals ran by acquiring it.**⁹ The myriad phenomena lived by acquiring it;

The numerous affairs were successfully completed by it⁵¹⁰;

All men used it,

But no one knew its name.⁵¹¹ All men employed it,

But no one saw its form.

The One was its appellation⁵¹²;

The Void was its dwelling;

Nonaction was its original constitution⁵¹³;

Harmony was its use.

For this reason, the superior Dao is so high it cannot be scrutinized,

Is so deep it cannot be fathomed.⁵¹⁴

It is clear and bright, but no one can name it;

It is broad and large, but no one can give it a form;

It stands alone and is not paired with anything else⁵¹⁵ And none of the myriad phenomena is able to issue it orders. Heaven and Earth, Yin and Yang,

The [four] seasons, the sun and moon,

The planets and constellations and cloudy vapors,

The wrigglers that walk and the crawlers that move,

And the plants that grow roots

All take their life from the Dao

But they do not decrease it.⁵¹⁶

They all return to the Dao

But they do not increase it.⁵¹⁷

It is hard and strong, yet it is not broken⁵¹⁸;

It is soft and weak, yet cannot be changed.

The subtlest of the fine cannot reach it;

The furthest of the distant cannot pass it.

Therefore it is only the Sage who is able to examine the formless,

Who is able to hear the [soundness.⁵¹⁹ When he knows the reality of the Void,

Later he is able to be supremely empty:

Then he penetrates to the quintessence of Heaven and Earth,

Penetrates to sameness and lacks differentiation,⁵²⁰

And harmonizes everywhere, yet is not full.⁵²¹

One who practices this Dao

Is called “Capable of Being Quintessential.”

He who is bright assuredly is able to examine into the distant, He knows what other men cannot know,

He gains what others⁵²² cannot acquire:

This is called “Examining into the Far and Knowing the Distant.”

If the sage king uses such a one,

The world submits.

Without likes, without hates,

When the superiors use . . .

then the people are not deluded and confused.

When the superiors are empty and inferiors quiescent, then the Dao gains its correct position.⁵²³ The trustworthy are able to be without desires,

And can issue commands to the people:

If you are extremely trustworthy and without affairs⁵²⁴

then the myriad phenomena are everywhere arranged.⁵²⁵ Divide them according to their natural divisions, then the myriad people will not fight.

Bestow positions on them according to their names,

then the myriad phenomena will settle themselves.⁵²⁶ Do not labor on behalf of order,

Do not be idle because of disorder.

Broad and large, and troublesome tasks will not reach you; Deep and subtle, and searching will not find you.

Now be One and not transform,

Gain the root of the Dao,

Grasp the few to know the many,

Gain the essentials of affairs,

Lay hold of the correct to correct the irregular.

First know highest antiquity,

Later. . . quintessential^ bright.

Embrace the Dao and control the measures And the world can be unified.

Observe highest antiquity,

And discern everywhere where it can be used.

Search into matters before they are nothing;

Control them when you have the means.⁵²⁷
